Afghan Taliban storm jail, release hundreds of prisoners

The UN Security Council calls on President Salva Kiir to free political prisoners in the hope of bringing about a ceasefire in South Sudan with rebels led by his former vice-president.

>Home affairs minister Mathias Chikawe has  said the government will consider reducing  the sentences of long-term prisoners whose behaviour has changed considerably but cannot be pardoned under the parole system.

The worst violence to hit Central African Republic's capital in a year further deteriorated Monday as more than 500 inmates escaped from a prison and militia fighters looted the offices of international aid organizations, officials said.
