Burundi opposition boycott polls, say they won’t be fair

A group of 17 political parties in Burundi agrees to boycott next month's elections, saying they will not be free and fair.

>Burundians voted yesterday in controversial elections that were condemned internationally amid an opposition boycott and grenade attacks, with the election commission claiming an “enormous” turnout despite many stations being quiet.

Bujumbura. Burundi’s main opposition parties said Wednesday that the holding of free and fair elections next week was “impossible” and that the result should not be recognised if they take place.

 Arrests, harassment, a clampdown on free speech: with less than a year before elections in Burundi, critics say the government is doing all it can clamp down on political challengers.

Members of the Coalition of the People’s Constitution (Ukawa) have reiterated that they will not participate in next year’s General Election under the current Constitution.
