Burundi: Sezibera wasn’t invited to talks

Burundi’s government ruled out yesterday talks with key opposition groups, rejecting calls by the influential Catholic Church for all sides to negotiate to ensure no return to civil war.

Uganda’s defence minister is in Burundi in the latest bid to kickstart peace talks between rival factions in the impoverished central African country, presidential officials said Thursday.

Kigali, Tuesday. The UN-led Burundi peace talks were thrown into further disarray Tuesday when the ruling CNDD-FDD party and the opposition UPRONA announced their withdrawal.

The Burundi dialogue was set to resume last Monday following calls by the international community to tame the escalating violence that has seen more than 300 killed since April.

Tanzania has called for the convening of an emergency ministerial meeting to address the crisis in the East African Community (EAC) member country, Burundi, which has already impacted on the operations of the regional organisation and the integration efforts in general.
