Do more to increase exports

Why has the shilling been falling inexorably against currencies of major trading partners in recent months? Why has Tanzania failed to take advantage of its less expensive commodities to increase exports to earn more forex?

Tanzania’s exports to India increased by about 70 per cent last year as the two countries amplify efforts to boost their bilateral trade relations, it was revealed yesterday.

While Tanzania mainland continues to record a decline in exports, Zanzibar’s have continued to grow.

The value of Tanzania’s annual exports was about $8.48 billion last year, dropping slightly from the previous year’s $8.60 billion.

>The value of traditional exports decreased by $10.3 million (Sh16.48 billion) in the year ending September 2014 compared with that in a similar period in 2013.

Tanzania’s foreign earnings from traditional crops dropped by 4.8 per cent during the year to April 2014 as both price and volume of exports dropped significantly in the world market.

Facing a growing domestic oversupply, a US crude oil producer and a pipeline company waged a quiet crusade in Washington earlier this year aimed at easing a decades-long ban on crude exports.
