Expected minimal electoral reforms buried deep under

A poll conducted by Afrobarometer, a reputable Africa-wide firm, shows that 89 per cent of Ugandans would like to see change in at least one aspect of the electoral system ahead of next year’s election.

The much anticipated electoral reforms demanded by both the Opposition and civil society for a free and fair election in 2016 did not feature on the agenda for the ruling party retreat, which closed yesterday, as had been expected.

A Member of the House of Representatives for Magomeni Constituency (CCM), Mr Salmin Awadhi Salmin, who died abruptly, while attending a Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) meeting on Thursday, was buried at his home Village Makunduchi, in the southern tip of Unguja, yesterday.

Mr Arthur Mwakapugi, the former permanent secretary in the Ministry of Energy and Minerals who died on Friday at the Aga Khan Hospital, will be laid to rest on Tuesday at Ilundo-Kiwira in Tukuyu. Mr Mwakapugi, who succumbed to liver cancer, worked for the government at different levels and retired in 2012.
