South Africa holds a day of "prayer and reflection" for President Nelson Mandela, the first in a week of commemorative events

July 18 is Nelson Mandela International Day. This year’s observation is the fifth since its launch by the United Nations in 2009. It is being marked, for the first time without the presence of the man, who is affectionately referred to as Madiba.

Kwa miaka mitano sasa mamilioni ya watu duniani wamekuwa wamekuwa wakijitolea dakika 67 za muda wao kila July 18 kuadhimisha miaka 67 ya harakati za kupigania uhuru za Mandela nchini Afrika Kusini. Mandela alifariki December 5 mwaka jana akiwa na miaka 95 kutokana na kuugua kwa muda mrefu.
