‘Katiba process draws legitimacy from openness’

This year is critical for women in Tanzania. In just a few months, we’ll find out if the country is to have a new national constitution with the power to transform the lives and protect the rights of millions of women.

The move has not been heartily welcome by many members who have expressed their dissatisfaction, describing the move as a waste of time and taxpayers’ money.

 For the last 30 years or so, particularly after the re-introduction of political pluralism in 1992, there have been persistent demands for a new constitutional order in Tanzania. These demands were partly re-enforced by the recommendations by the Nyalali Commission in 1991, but pressure can be traced back to the 1980s.
