Leaders urge govt to reopen Garissa University College

Garissa University College will be reopened after a meeting of top education officials and Moi University Senate to be held in the next two weeks, Deputy President William Ruto has said.

Gunmen raided a Kenya university before dawn Thursday, firing indiscriminately and taking hostages. At least 30 people were hospitalized from the attack at Garissa University College, the Kenyan Red Cross said. Peace activists in Kenya are calling for the reopening of the college where 148 people were killed by gunmen from the Somalia-based al-Shabab group.

The US Embassy in Nairobi said the attack was a show of “cowardice.” “We are saddened & angered by today’s terrorist attack at Garissa Univ. Our deepest condolences to family and friends of victims. “CowardsNeverWin,” the embassy posted on its Twitter account.
