Residents in the region yesterday received the 53rd anniversary of Tanzania Mainland’s independence with mixed feelings.

President John Magufuli’s call for Tanzanians to clean their surroundings on the 54th Independence Anniversary was well received here yesterday with some organisation members coming up in large numbers to clean the Samunge Market near the National Milling Corporation.

Fifty three years ago today, Tanzania Mainlanders, led by Mwalimu Julius Nyerere, lowered the British colonialist’s Union Jack and hoisted our green, yellow, black and blue flag. The ceremony symbolised hope for better and dignified lives of the people of this country.
