Malawi presidential election: Polls to open in historic re-run

Official results are not yet declared but the state broadcaster says Lazarus Chakwera is the victor.

Tunisia is set to hold its first election under a new constitution passed earlier this year following a 2011 uprising.

Malawi’s President Joyce Banda on Saturday declared this week’s chaotic election “null and void” and called for a fresh vote, throwing the impoverished nation into crisis.

The opposition candidate won nearly 60% of the vote to defeat the incumbent.

Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) will re-run parliamentary preferential polls in 10 constituencies after its National Executive Committee (NEC) found out that the polls were marred by irregularities. The decision was announced by CCM publicity secretary Nape Nnauye when announcing those who were nominated to run for parliamentary seats through the party’s ticket.
