Migrant boat capsizes off Libya

About 50 people are found dead in the hold of a boat carrying migrants intercepted off the coast of Libya, the Italian coastguard says.

Coast guard officials in the Libyan capital have told the BBC they have stopped the patrols intended to prevent migrants from trying to cross the Mediterranean.

At least 36 migrants drowned when their boat sank off the Libyan coast on Tuesday, officials say, following the recovery of more bodies.

A major rescue operation is under way after a boat carrying up to 700 migrants capsized in the Mediterranean Sea, the Italian coastguard has told the BBC.

A boat said to have been carrying more than 200 people capsizes on Lake Victoria, with reports saying lives have been lost.
