Need to beware as Cyber Law takes effect September 1

Tanzanians have never been active in the social media to the degree we are witnessing this year. And there is no doubt that the activity will increase as October 25 approaches.

The world has gone hi-tech. Information technology (IT) rules the globe, now aptly referred to as a “global village”.

To the government, the just-passed Cybercrime Bill is very good law aimed at curbing the increase in Internet associated vices, but to section of lawmakers, press freedom stakeholders and bloggers, this is a draconian law that shouldn’t be allowed in a democratic state like Tanzania.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis today said that the Centre is working on formulating a new law under IT Act, on the lines of section 66 (A) that was struck down recently by the Supreme Court.

Fadnavis was replying to Shiv Sena MLC Neelam Gorhe, who asked whether the state will frame a new law in place of Section 66 (A) that would compensate for the repercussions on the Supreme Court order.

The recently introduced Cyber crime Act bill of 2015 by the parliament of Tanzania promises to provide security to all citizens from any sort of cyber-attack that may come their way as they are surfing on the internet. For a developing country like Tanzania this is a big step in trying to make sure justice is served and that all those that are using the internet as a medium to take advantage of people’s rights, privacy and that of the state are dealt with accordingly.
