Opposition worried over ballooning national debt

The Ukawa coalition government will review the national debt which its presidential candidate, Mr Edward Lowassa, has said was growing at an alarming rate.

 A new annual general report by the Controller and Auditor General (CAG) has put the national debt at Sh21.2 trillion up from Sh16.98 trillion in 2011/2012 financial year.

The government yesterday assured the public that still the nation can seek loans from various international financial institutions.

Lately, there has been a lot of discussion about the growing size of the national debt and the ability to pay back the loans.  What is often lacking from this discussion is the issue of the distribution of the costs and benefits of borrowing.

Chadema presidential candidate, Mr Edward Lowassa, said the opposition would review all mining contracts if he ascends to the presidency.
