OUTBREAK: Maize disease piles misery in Tarime

Dar es Salaam. Misery continued to pile on Dar es Salaam residents due to heavy rain that pounded the city on Monday night and continued yesterday, with some schools ordered closed while the flooding has led to the raising of food prices and transport costs.

Maize varieties found to be resistant to a viral disease, which has caused havoc to farmers in East Africa in recent years, have not yet been released as they are awaiting further screening.

Tanzania is among five countries in Africa to be covered by a new project to curb the spread of a disease lethal to the vital maize crop in sub-Saharan Africa.
