More than 53 000 elephants have been massacred in the last decade in Tanzania's Selous game reserve, according to the Conservation Action Trust. In Chad's Zakouma National Park 4 300 elephants counted in 2002 were reduced to just 450 in 2011.

A new study suggests the number of Africa's elephants has declined to a critical point.
