 Petrol and kerosene prices have risen. That happens at a time when the government has slapped taxes on a number of commodities, forcing Tanzanians to dig deeper into their pockets.

World food prices rose in the first quarter of the year for the first time since their all-time high in August 2012, driven by rising demand in China, drought in the United States and unrest in Ukraine.

Chadema presidential candidate Edward Lowassa has promised Tabora residents that he will raise tobacco prices if he is elected. The opposition coalition flag-bearer also declared war on traders who are yet to pay tobacco farmers their outstanding arrears.

Even though there hasn’t been a public uproar over fuel prices in the country recently, statistics gathered by The Citizen on Saturday from the Energy and Water Utilities Regulatory Authority (Ewura) reveal a steady pump price increase over the past one year.
