Police brutality condemned

>Thursday excessive use of force by police against journalists who were covering the summoning of the chairman of the main opposition at police headquarters for interrogation has been greeted with wave of condemnation from rights activists and journalist associations.

>Opposition leaders yesterday demanded disciplinary and legal measures be taken against police and government officials over Thursday’s brutality against journalists at the ministry of Home Affairs headquarters.

May be you’ve seen it on the United States government website (state.gov) -- it notes the most widespread and systemic human rights violations in Tanzania. They include use of excessive force by police officers, prison guards, and sometimes by military personnel.  In the past such violations even caused deaths and injuries.

The United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in Uganda (OHCHR) has condemned what it called use of excessive force and degrading treatment by police ahead of the 2016 elections.

After two incidents in which his motorcade has been hit with tear gas, Ukawa presidential candidate and former Prime Minister Edward Lowassa said yesterday that he now fully realises the brutal side of law enforcement agencies.
