Tanzania needs at least $50 million (Sh80 billion) to revive sisal production to reach the levels the country enjoyed in the first 15 post independence years, according to stakeholders of sisal industry.

Sisal land will continue to shrink in Tanzania if the government will not take urgent steps to protect it by forcing investors who buy estates for the crop to develop it to increase its production.

Katani Limited is negotiating with the Tanzania Electric Supply Company (Tanesco) on the possibility of selling power generated from sisal waste to the state-owned firm.

The CCM presidential candidate, Dr John Magufuli, yesterday pledged he will repossess privatised sisal estates that lie idle with the aim of redistributing them to farmers for free if he is elected in October 25.
