Review process: Now aim for consensus

Members of the Constituent Assembly were urged yesterday to aim for a national consensus when discussing the draft constitution.

 For the last 30 years or so, particularly after the re-introduction of political pluralism in 1992, there have been persistent demands for a new constitutional order in Tanzania. These demands were partly re-enforced by the recommendations by the Nyalali Commission in 1991, but pressure can be traced back to the 1980s.

>In order to resolve the issue of the structure of the union in the second Draft Constitution, which has polarized members of the Constituent Assembly (CA), the country should first reach a compromise in order to attain consensus in the Katiba writing process

The country’s newest political party, the Alliance for Change and Transparency (ACT-Tanzania), has joined calls for a halt to the constitution making process.
