Rise in school dropout rate, truancy blamed on parents

Nearly 71 per cent of 216 students who were supposed to finish Form Four at Bunda Secondary School this year have failed to do so.

The rate at which pupils are dropping out of school, particularly in rural areas, is a source of national concern. It is now estimated that about half of enrolled pupils drop out before completing primary education.

>The dropout rate for schoolgirls  at Mipa Secondary School in Sekebugoro Ward, Kishapu District,  Shinyanga Region is expected to decrease after the construction of a dormitory for them.

Authorities in Sumbawanga District, Rukwa Region, have ordered arrest and court action against parents and guardians who have allegedly failed to cooperate with village and ward leaders in curbing absenteeism in schools.

Average world market prices for gold decreased in June by 1.4 per cent to $1181.5 per troy ounce compared with the preceding month, a Bank of Tanzania (BoT) report has established.
