Rwanda MPs back term limit change

Rwanda's highest court has ruled in favour of changing the constitution to allow President Paul Kagame to stand for a third seven-year term in 2017.

A referendum on whether to scrap the limit on presidential terms in Rwanda will take place next week, the government announces.

Oil-rich Congo’s government has called an October referendum on allowing veteran leader Denis Sassou Nguesso, who has already notched up more than 30 years in power, to run for a controversial third term.

The question of presidential term limits is a hot point in African politics. Currently, two East African nations Rwanda and Burundi are at flashpoint over the same matter.

A plan to restrict all West African presidents to two terms in office has been dropped by heads of state, with Togo and The Gambia leading the objections.
