Secret deals in energy, mining sectors are milking Tanzanians dry

As Tanzanians wait for the 2014/15 national budget with bated breath, a new report shows that the government loses about $248 million (Sh415 billion) annually in tax revenue through misinvoicing by mining companies alone.

Two branches of the Tanzania govt reached a point where they sought to stare each other down on a matter of principle and practice! In the event, however, it isn’t quite clear which of the two blinked first - whereby one branch effectively imposed its will upon the other!

After investors accused it of secrecy surrounding contracts, the government has dared its critics to go public with whatever details they choose to disclose. According to senior officials, including ministers, there is no law or regulation that stands in their way

Prime Minister Mizengo Pinda yesterday asked lawyers in East Africa to consider the public’s interest and give priority to ordinary wananchi when signing various contracts with investors in the mining sector.

Chadema presidential candidate, Mr Edward Lowassa, said the opposition would review all mining contracts if he ascends to the presidency.
