Tanganyika-Zanzibar union is going strong, says Kikwete

On April 26 this year, Tanzania marked 51 years of the Union between what were the Republic of Tanganyika and the Isles Republic of Zanzibar. Tanganyika was granted (political) independence on a silver platter – relatively speaking – by Her Britannic Majesty’s government on December 9, 1961.

>Tanzanians have just celebrated 50 years – Golden Jubilee -- of the Union of Tanganyika and Zanzibar. Formerly, the two entities were independent of each other. However, on April 26, 1964 they agreed to form what was known then as the United Republic of Tanganyika and Zanzibar.
