Tanzania should be serious with farming

Although it is about six years since contract farming was introduced in Tanzania, especially among cotton growers, few districts are aware of it.

Tanzania has embarked on a range of strategies and programs aimed  at increasing agriculture production and productivity.  Some of the programs include; Agriculture sector Development Program (ASDP), The Tanzania Agriculture and Food Security Investment Plan (TAFSIP) and the Big Result Now (BRN). A change is sweeping across Tanzania. Our smallholder farmers are growing and harvesting more than ever. Our grain storages are full. We are food secure.

With local and foreign investment concentrated in urban areas, hundreds of thousands of young Tanzanians leave their rural homes annually to seek employment in towns.

Tanzania depends heavily on agriculture. Yet when it comes to sustaining the sector, our leadership seems to believe it can thrive on its own.

Seaweed farming has benefited a lot of people in Zanzibar and creation of a cluster programme has added to the advantages of the farming as attested by Mwajuma Mwinyi, a seaweed farmer who lives in Zanzibar.

After learning that it is through farming that the youth, who are the most victims of unemployment in the country, can be self-employed instead of being employed, some of them are utilising the sector’s potential.
