The challenges of raising a child with albinism

Maureen,6, is the first born in a family of three and is in class two. Full of activities, her typical day almost looks like that of an adult.

Children develop at different rates and at one point or another, most parents have worried that their child is lagging behind on the developmental curve. Seeing each child as unique, how can a parent tell that their child has special needs?

As we mark World Down syndrome day, Woman Magazine talks to Mzee Ally Kawambwa and Rukia Said, parents raising a child with Down syndrome. Mzee Kawambwa shares with us the challenges he and his wife face on a daily basis as they strive to raise their daughter.

Children don’t have the cognitive skills to truly understand the concept of empathy until they’re 8 or 9. But 5-year-olds, usually highly preoccupied with fairness, are concerned about being treated well, and they want others — friends, strangers, even characters in books — to be treated well too.
