UK election 2015: My experience

In exactly 131 days from today, we will be heading to the polls to exercise our constitutional right – electing councilors, legislators and more importantly, our fifth president since we attained independence 54 years ago.

There will be no new constitution until after the 2015 General Election. We have it on the authority of the chairman of the Tanzania Centre for Democracy (TCD), Mr John Cheyo.

Last week I had a conversation with a longtime friend who supports Edward Lowasa. He’s in his 40s, resides in Dar-es-salaam, highly educated, and heads one of the largest commercial bank in the region. He voted for President Kikwete  in 2005 and was in fact the first person who alerted me to the breadth of his support. In 2010, he voted for President Kikwete, and opposition for MP and local Government leader.

There is no doubt that we are all in election mood. Whether you are a supporter of the Opposition, a diehard fan of the ruling party or even one of those who claim to be non-partisan, you cannot escape the reality of the coming elections.

The opposition says it will boycott the 2015 General Election if the poll will be held using the current constitution.

December 14, 2014 will probably be recorded as the turning point in Tanzania’s politics.

2015 is a crucial year for African democracy with citizens casting their votes for presidential elections in 12 African countries. We have already seen Nigeria and Lesotho undergo transfers in power. Sudan, Ethiopia, Cote d’lvoire, whose elections are set to take place on 25 October as well, Burkina Faso and Tanzania who  also have elections in October.
