THE ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) has reaffirmed its readiness to work with the opposition to rescue the process of writing the new constitution, but stressed that any discussion should take place in the Constituent Assembly (CA) and not otherwise.

Members of the Coalition of the People’s Constitution (Ukawa) have reiterated that they will not participate in next year’s General Election under the current Constitution.

Recently, political parties forming the Coalition of Defenders of People’s Constitution (Ukawa) announced that they won’t participate in the referendum scheduled for April 30. This will be a second time for Ukawa to boycott the constitution making process.

President Jakaya Kikwete does not have the legal power to revoke the appointment of members of the Constituent Assembly (MCAs) who walked out on Wednesday, according to the Attorney General, Justice Frederick Werema.

On Friday, the country was shocked with news that the parties forming what is known as the Coalition of the Defenders of the People’s Constitution—Ukawa, in its Kiswahili acronym—had decided to pull out of the planned Referendum for the Proposed Constitution slatted for April 30, this year.
