Burundian President Pierre Nkurunziza was sworn in for a controversial third term in power Thursday, the presidency said, following elections last month, weeks of protests and a failed coup.

Oil-rich Congo’s government has called an October referendum on allowing veteran leader Denis Sassou Nguesso, who has already notched up more than 30 years in power, to run for a controversial third term.

The presidential term under the new Constitution should be extended to seven years instead of the current five years, some members of the Constituent Assembly (CA) have proposed.

President Museveni has said he allowed the Kyankwanzi resolution in order to stop ambitious people within the NRM who wanted power using subversive means.

Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni has said the people do not want him to retire although he does not “need power”.
