We’ll pay pension funds: govt

The government yesterday asked social security funds to consider issuing loans to students of higher learning institutions, admitting that the board tasked with the responsibility was overwhelmed.

For months, Tanzania has been in the news for all the wrong reasons—corruption, drug trafficking, abductions, torture, bomb attacks, political skullduggery, clashes between pastoralists and farmers, highway banditry, questions about the efficiency of Cabinet ministers and mistrust over the constitutional review.

Recent efforts by pension funds to widening their coverage and cater for the self-employed and informal sector workers are commendable. This should go a long way in securing the future of workers outside the mainstream sectors, who, needless to say, form the bulk of the workforce in the country.
