Why are South African students protesting?

Thousands of South African students demanding lower university fees gathered on Friday for a march on the historic seat of government in Pretoria, a sign of the post-apartheid 'Born Free' generation flexing its political muscles.

South African university students burned tyres and barricaded entrances  to one campus on Tuesday in continued protest at administrators' plans to raise tuition fees next year.

About 30 people have been arrested in South Africa in the biggest student protests to hit the country since minority rule ended in 1994.
