The Government Chemist and Laboratory Agency (GCLA) does not have powers to approve whether one herb cures a certain ailment or not as claimed by herbalists, senior officials have said.

The government yesterday put on the spotlight herbalists who own suspect diagnostic machines—the Quantum Magnetic Analysers—which were exposed by The Citizen on Sunday as the healers’ tricky way of earning money from patients.

At least 10,000 out of the 75,000 traditional healers and alternative health practitioners estimated to operate in the country had been registered by the government until the end of the year.

Dar es Salaam — The government yesterday put on the spotlight herbalists who own suspect diagnostic machines--the Quantum Magnetic Analysers--which were exposed by The Citizen on Sunday as the healers' tricky way of earning money from patients.

 Herbalists across the country yesterday rejected the government’s ban on all public advertisements of herbal medicine, at a dramatic meeting held in Dar es Salaam. 

It is one machine that has earned millions of shillings to the so-called healers or ‘doctors’ of traditional medicine, but one which remains with a dubious medical record.

The government has issued a ban on all public advertisements of herbal medicines by alternative health practitioners, including traditional healers.
