Zanzibar in crisis: The way forward

Since the re-introduction of multipartism elections in Zanzibar have always been controversial. Most of polls ended in chaos. In 1995 for instance, some media outlets announced that Civic United Front (CUF) has won the presidency before the same was refuted by the government.

President Jakaya Kikwete has directed his office to facilitate a meeting between Civic United Front (CUF) officials and the Chief of the Defence Forces, General Davis Mwamunyange, over the Zanzibar crisis.

There was no breakthrough on the Zanzibar political impasse by yesterday as the Civic United Front (CUF) SupremeCouncil insisted that the party would not go back to the polls.

President Jakaya Kikwete yesterday chaired an emergency meeting of CCM’s Central Committee, which sources said was convened in response to the crisis in Zanzibar sparked by last week’s annulment of election results.

We are now in the third month of the political crisis in Zanzibar. Talks are going at the Zanzibar State House looking for solution and we are told to be patient and things are going to come out for the interest of Zanzibaris.
