>The dramatic changes in the fortunes of the Nile Perch-driven economy in the Lake Zone, from the peak to the  rock bottom, are features of a sad narrative. During its heyday from the early 1990s to the mid-2000s, the Nile Perch (sangara)was among the most distinctive features of Mwanza, rivalled only by the picturesque rocks.

>It rose from the ashes to become the backbone of the Lake Zone economy, supporting 300,000 livelihoods directly and another 3 million indirectly, but the Nile perch is now on the brink of extinction, posing a serious threat to Lake Victoria, the world’s second largest fresh water lake.
