Call for agro-sector funding

Agriculture is the mainstay of Tanzania’s economy whereby between 70 and 80 per cent of its population depends on the sector which is not only the backbone of the national economy but also a survival tool for majority of its citizens.

>Tanzania can attain a six per cent growth in the agriculture sector from the present four per cent through application of modern farming methods, according to a senior official in the Agriculture ministry.

Efforts by the government to improve the agricultural sector, which is the country’s backbone of the economy, statistics from the Bank of Tanzania (BoT) show that the growth of the sector is sluggish. One of the reasons for poor growth of the sector is lack of support from commercial banks.

The United States Government, through the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC), agreed on November 14, 2014, to provide up to $9.78 million for the development of high-impact investment projects in Tanzania’s energy sector.
