For years now the demand for minerals has been increasing more than ever before, which in turn has increased the demand for mineral industry professionals working in the industry to meet the growing industry.

This is the sixth part of an article on politics of reforming the mineral sector in Tanzania. In the politics of reforming the mineral sector this week we explore and trace the new challenges that emerged amidst successes and the efforts the Forth Phase Government took to overcome and continue developing the mining sector in order to become the engine for economic growth of the country.

>The mining sector, along with other natural resource sectors, remains critical to African development and has been an important contributor to the continent’s growth over the last decade. In fact, it would not be an understatement to say that Africa’s mineral resources defined its relationship with the rest of the world, for at least the last few centuries, and thus recurrent references to the scramble for Africa.

Tanzania needs to continue strengthening its tax reforms and administration to enable corporate organisations to pay taxes, it has been suggested.

Anxiety has heightened in the Zambian mining sector over possible mass job losses. According to the local media Mopani Copper Mine planned to send home some 4,000 workers due to the current slump in the world copper price.     

Less than three per cent of funds requested annually for agriculture and livestock sectors in East Africa are availed by the governments, according to a recent report on the constraints affecting the twin sectors.
