The World Bank board of directors has approved a $300 million (Sh480 billion) loan to Tanzania to improve its railway and road transport infrastructure.

The government seeks to mobilise funds from both local and international sources so as to improve the central transport corridor -- especially by expanding Dar es Salaam Port and revamping the central railway line.

President Jakaya Kikwete and his Burundian counterpart, Mr Pierre Nkurunziza, yesterday launched the beginning of three freight wagon train routes to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Uganda and Burundi, at the Tanzania Railway Limited (TRL) central station in Dar es Salaam.
