EDITORIAL: Don’t reduce house to vote-hunting theatre

>The National Electoral Commission (NEC) has reversed its position on the referendum and is now saying it can organise the exercise to accept or reject the proposed new Constitution in April next year.

Politically, 2015 has so far been a year of surprises. Former Prime Minister Mr Edward Lowassa, a strong political figure, has been associated with two bombshells which have entirely changed the political landscape ahead of the October General Election.

Election fever is rising by the day and politicians have started inventing ways and means to win the hearts of voters. Even the contributions of legislators in Parliament seem to designed to achieve this.

>Tanzania is in seventh position among 45 countries that have exhibited political commitment to tackling hunger and malnutrition across the world, according to the Hunger and Nutrition Commitment Index 2013 released on Wednesday.

>Riots are  a primitive means of protest applied by people who may have genuine grievances that can be better addressed through peaceful processions or dialogue with the authorities.

It is generally agreed that individuals, save for those who elect to be irreligious, relate to God through different religions, for which clerics play a facilitative role. The importance of clerics need not be belaboured here. But basically, it suffices to say, a cleric must be a role model by word and deed.

>Commuter bus services in Tanzania’s urban centres are a necessary evil. In  spite of inconvenience like congestion,  the rudeness of many  conductors and drivers and recklessness that places  the lives of those on board at great risk, they are the cheapest mode of transport.

Our health care system has a myriad of problems. Government health facilities lack essential drugs and medical equipment; one physician serves 30,000 patients while the World Health Organisation (WHO) recommends 1,000. We have only one pharmacist for 50,000 Tanzanians while a single nurse contends with 60,000!
