EDITORIAL: Revisit MV Victoria role following near disaster

Yesterday’s edition of The Citizen featured a photograph depicting a hectic scene at Mwanza port, as cargo was being off-loaded from MV Victoria. The thrust of its caption was the fear that the ship was too old and slow to function properly – a fear that, in our opinion, is wholly justified.

>It will take a very long period for memories of the recent tragedy in Kahama District, Shinyanga Region, to fade, especially for survivors in the three affected villages.

>It is bad enough that people die. It is worse when some do so when that eventuality could have been avoided but isn’t due to recklessness and greed. Going by the saying that hope is the last thing that a person should lose, people close to a terminally ill  patient don’t despair.

>We could not agree more with some critics on the need to go beyond quantity and look at the quality of the education being given to our young ones.

>People will always travel to see places and do business; they will always have the need to eat and drink. For this factor alone, hospitality industry is one area whose growth and sustenance is guaranteed anywhere , so long as  prerequisites such as peace and security, are met.

>For about ten years now, stakeholders, especially the three riparian countries sharing Lake Victoria, which are Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania, have been dragging their feet over the plan to impose seasonal fishing in order to save Nile perch.
