Ethiopia’s barley farmers wake up to smell the beer

 Serengeti Breweries Limited (SBL) has entered into an agreement with farmers in Basuto and West Kilimanjaro to produce barley on 7,100 acres.

Productivity of barley can shoot up to 20 bags a hectare from seven bags through an initiative spearheaded by an agricutural input supplier called Lonagro.

Serengeti Breweries Limited (SBL) plans to cut its barley imports by a half this year. By so doing, it will spend about Sh5.5 billion on sourcing the product through contracting farmers locally.
