If data is anything to go by, ours is the poorest region in Africa. The harsh reality is that no country in East Africa deserves to be called the region’s economic powerhouse as is the case with other trading blocs and communities.

Some of the findings documented in the East African Community (EAC) Common Market Scorecard 2014 raise questions as to whether member states are truly serious about integrating their economies.

Tanzania will enhance efforts to remove barriers to intra-African trade relations that hamper economic growth and poverty reduction initiatives.

President Jakaya Kikwete and senior government officials are scheduled to meet members of the business community on October 2 and deliberate on matters that affect growth of businesses.

Although Tanzania’s economy has been growing at around 7 per cent over the past 10 years, its benefits are yet to trickle down to the majority of people.
