If data is anything to go by, ours is the poorest region in Africa. The harsh reality is that no country in East Africa deserves to be called the region’s economic powerhouse as is the case with other trading blocs and communities.

Tanzania will enhance efforts to remove barriers to intra-African trade relations that hamper economic growth and poverty reduction initiatives.

Last week, the World Trade Organisation (WTO) met in Kenya for its regular ministerial conference. The meeting produced several breakthroughs, including a plan to phase out agricultural export subsidies and to eliminate tariffs on many IT products.

The East African Community (EAC) member states have been called on to enhance the involvement of the private sector and civil society in regional project activities mostly through consultative dialogue frameworks as part of efforts to significantly boost regional trade and investments.
