UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay called Thursday for increased protection for people with albinism, after the barbaric murder of a 40-year-old woman with albinism in north-western Tanzania on 12 May. 

“This killing and the terrible circumstances surrounding it sadly demonstrate that the human rights situation of people with albinism in Tanzania and other countries, remains dire,” Pillay said.

Tanzania has been cited as one of the countries with the highest levels of legal protection of the environment, according to an environmental law lecturer.

The government’s plan to protect the lives of animals in the Serengeti National Park by linking it with Lake Victoria’s ecosystem has provoked opposition from the community in the vicinity. The proposal to integrate the park in the Ghuba Speke game-controlled area faces at least three levels of conflicting interests.
