INSIGHT: Tanzania joins league to combat illegal timber trade

>Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda have declared their intention of working together to curb the illegal timber trade that is stripping Africa of its forestry resources.

The groundbreaking decision was finalised in Durban, South African and was facilitated by the WWF

In 2013, the wildlife trade monitoring network TRAFFIC, and WWF—the leading organisation in wildlife conservation and endangered species—carried out a rapid assessment on the Tanzania and Mozambique border to establish the extent of illegal cross-border timber trade.

Zanzibar is increasingly becoming a transit point for timber illegally harvested on Mainland Tanzania, a senior government official in the Isles revealed in the city yesterday.
