TZ joins forces with nieghbouring countries to fight illegal timber trade

>The economic costs of illegal logging are not only staggering globally and in the region but also greatly handicapping national efforts and the endeavour of our neighbours to exploit the potential of forests to improve the quality of life of their people.

>Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda have declared their intention of working together to curb the illegal timber trade that is stripping Africa of its forestry resources.

In 2013, the wildlife trade monitoring network TRAFFIC, and WWF—the leading organisation in wildlife conservation and endangered species—carried out a rapid assessment on the Tanzania and Mozambique border to establish the extent of illegal cross-border timber trade.

Zanzibar is increasingly becoming a transit point for timber illegally harvested on Mainland Tanzania, a senior government official in the Isles revealed in the city yesterday.

More than 50 experts from various sectors involved in conservation efforts and timber trade are meeting in the city for two days beginning today for the 2nd Annual East Africa Timber Trade Stakeholders Forum.

As Tanzania gears up for the second phase of the anti-poaching campaign Operesheni Tokomeza Ujangili, it has been urged to create National Environment Security Task Forces (NESTs) inclusive of NGOs.
