Internet users hit over 9m

The completion of the National ICT Broadband Backbone (NICTBB) and the booming number of mobile phone users has attracted and increased the number of Internet users in Tanzania to nine million.

According to the World Bank (WB), Kenya is the leading and fastest growing internet user country in East Africa. It is followed by Uganda, Rwanda, Tanzania and Burundi, in that order. The WB statistics show that out of 100 people in Kenya, 43 use the internet. The composition of users in other countries stands in the order of Uganda (18 per cent), Rwanda (11 per cent), Tanzania (5 per cent) and Burundi (1 per cent). Online marketplace eBay is forcing users to change their passwords after a cyber-attack compromised its systems.

The US firm said a database had been hacked between late February and early March, and had contained encrypted passwords and other non-financial data.

The company added that it had no evidence of there being unauthorized activity on its members' accounts.
