Kenya’s remittances from diaspora rise

The African Diaspora has grown to become such an important source of foreign exchange for Africa to the extent that the African Union (AU) has designated it as a sixth development “zone”, the other zones being West Africa, East Africa, Central Africa, Southern Africa, and North Africa.

The African diaspora and migrants have for years been instrumental in helping family and friends at home get by, as huge annual remittance flows illustrate, but their contributions beyond remittances could have a significant impact on development, if tapped into.

Private capital remittance sent by Ugandans in the diaspora dropped by $233 million (about Sh646.1b) in the first 10 months this year, a reflection of weak external environment.

The BBC's Anne Soy looks at the ongoing dispute between Kenya's government and the country's teachers union over a 50% pay rise, which the government describes as unaffordable.

Kenya's Supreme Court says that the government should abide by a lower court's decision to give teachers a pay rise of at least 50%.

A Kenyan appeals court rejects a pay rise of up to 60% which had been awarded to the country's teachers by an industrial court and sparked a five-week strike.
