Diaspora remittances better than aid

The African diaspora and migrants have for years been instrumental in helping family and friends at home get by, as huge annual remittance flows illustrate, but their contributions beyond remittances could have a significant impact on development, if tapped into.

Remittances from the diaspora increased by a significant 16 per cent to (Sh10.4 billion) $119.6 million in March from $103.4 million in a comparable period in 2013, Central Bank of Kenya said on Friday.

Private capital remittance sent by Ugandans in the diaspora dropped by $233 million (about Sh646.1b) in the first 10 months this year, a reflection of weak external environment.

Until the recent past, the recounts of most Tanzanians in the Diaspora had been filled with horrific and disappointing experiences regarding mismanagement of funds and investment attempts back home in Tanzania. Most Diasporas entrusted their projects and investments back home to their immediate relations, which, more often than not, led to devastating consequences. Some Diasporas even fear the thought of returning home with little to show for their stay abroad.
