Meet to discuss food, nutrition security

Agricultural researchers from different institutions in Tanzania and the US will be meeting this week in Morogoro to discuss progress of some research activities they are conducting aimed at addressing food insecurity in the country.

The government’s decision to allow farmers to export maize that has been stockpiled in the 2013/14 season is commendable. But it should be handled cautiously to avoid artificial food shortages driven by dishonest dealers with an eye on price hikes.

The minister for Agriculture, Food Security and Co-operatives, Engineer Christopher Chiza, last Monday announced that in the 2013/14 season, Tanzania has produced 14 million tons of food and the normal requirements is 12 million tons.
