>Tanzania Revenues Authority (TRA) wants to review all contracts signed between the government and investors in the lucrative gas and mining sector so that the country collects more revenue from them. However, already there is concern that if not well handled, the move could create uncertainty and fear among foreign investors.

 Since 1995, when Jeffrey Sachs and Andrew Warner published their influential study claiming that natural resource abundance has a strong negative impact on growth, the term “resource curse” has been associated with mineral wealth in developing countries.

>The government has started auctioning over Sh100 million worth minerals it confiscated at three airports, an official with the Tanzania Minerals Audit Agency (TMAA) has said.

The Tanzania Chamber of Minerals and Energy (TCME) has warned that the recent intrusion by illegal and small-scale miners in mining areas will have negative impacts on investors interested in the sector.

According to geological experts, Tanzania has no local industry to manufacture items from the valued minerals due to unreliable power supply, to mention but a few problems facing the sector.

The government has embarked on a plan to revive four cashew processing plants in the southern regions, the Prime Minister, Mr Mizengo Pinda, told Parliament yesterday.
