South Sudan govt directs civilians to leave UN base

The army in South Sudan tells all civilians to leave the city of Bentiu, saying it is on the verge of recapturing the oil hub from rebel forces.

The UN has warned the situation in South Sudan has actually worsened since a peace deal was signed by the president and the rebel leader last month under intense international pressure.

The United Nations says it fears casualties after attackers forced their way into a UN peacekeeping base in South Sudan's Jonglei state.

Dozens of civilians sheltering in a UN base in the South Sudan city of Bor have been killed in an attack by armed youths, the UN says.

Kiryandongo District chairperson Ben Moro has requested government to screen South Sudanese refugees who were recently resettled in the district. “There are fears that some of them could be armed. We request government to screen them,” Mr Moro said.

The failure of peace talks and the end of South Sudan’s wet season could unleash fresh fighting between government forces and rebel factions, propelling millions of people in the world’s youngest nation back towards a man-made famine, analysts and humanitarian workers warn.
